Venture to Volo for ghost tales, grilles

VOLO Fall is an especially spine-tingling time for a visit to the Volo Auto Museum, where a Svengoolie meet-and-greet will kick off the Haunted Trolley Tour season.

Svengoolie, aka the premiere horror show icon of Chicago, will be at the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo, from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. His appearance sets the stage for Volos hair-raising Haunted Trolley Tours, during which some guests have claimed to have caught a glimpse of Volos resident wraith.

People whove seen things (on the Volo Auto Museum and Antique Mall grounds) have most often seen a man in uniform or wearing a trench coat, said Brian Grams, director of the Volo Auto Museum, which has been featured on the Discovery Channel, Ghost Lab and other programs investigating possible paranormal activity.

Those partaking in the tour will hear of the legend of Wallace Gale, a Civil War soldier from the farm where the Volo Auto Museum buildings now stand. Gale died while serving in 1863, and is buried in the cemetery just west of the museum grounds, Grams said.

Over the years a lot of our employees have asked, and customers would ask, Do you have a person in Civil War costume walking around? And we did not, Grams said. If theres such a thing as ghosts, we think its (Gale).

Tour-goers also will meet exclusively with Vincent, the ghost groundskeeper.

Grams said the tours are family friendly, and center on said-to-be-true ghost stories rather than ghouls and gore.

Its good for all ages, he said. Its not something thats going to scare the bejeesus out of the kids.

The tours are $6 per adult and $5 per child, with paid museum admission. It is recommended to reserve seats in advance. Tickets may be purchased at volocars.com. Trolley tours will continue weekends only Sept. 28 through Oct. 27.

The Volo Auto Museum features roughly 300 classic, antique, muscle and Hollywood cars. And dont miss the new Cars in Wonderland showroom with kiddy rides, Disney and Looney Tunes characters and more. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For other information, visit volocars.com, find us on Facebook, or call (815) 385-3644.
