Volo Auto Museum celebrates Seuss with book drive

VOLO — The Volo Auto Museum is celebrating Dr. Seuss’ 110th birthday Sunday, and you’re invited.

In fact, in the near-to-here gleam zone of Volo-ma-zing, kids get in free if a book you should bring.

To honor Theodor Seuss Geisel — the amazing and prolific children’s book author born March 2, 1904, and known to the world as Dr. Seuss — the museum is collecting new or gently used children’s books to donate to Bernie’s Book Bank.

Visitors bringing one or more books for the drive on Sunday will receive a free child’s admission ticket for each book donated, said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road.

“My 5-year-old daughter and I read books together daily,” said Grams. “It’s a great way for us to bond and she’s learning in the process. I wanted to do something on Sunday that’s both fun and helps a great cause — putting books in the hands of kids.”

Bernie’s Book Bank distributes new and gently used books throughout the Chicago area, including in Lake and McHenry counties. The book bank serves roughly 80,000 children annually, according to berniesbookbank.org.

The Volo Auto Museum is an especially awe-spendous place to celebrate Seuss, as it’s home not only to hundreds of classic, muscle and Hollywood cars, but also to the one and only Seuss-mobile. This $1.2 million creation was used in the live-action 2003 film “Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat,” with Mike Myers.

“This car is phenomenal — a true fantasy car,” Grams said. “And we also have a life-sized Cat in the Hat made from the suit Myers wore in the film, as well as a larger-than-life Grinch figure from ‘The Grinch that Stole Christmas.’”

“The Cat in the Hat.” What’s better than that? Head to Volo this Sunday, and you’ll have a fun day. Search your nook for a book. Spend awhile; share a smile.

The Volo Auto Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. For other information, call (815) 385-3644, or find the Volo Auto Museum on Facebook.
