29,881 mile survivor - Rare 409-409 HP motor, 4-speed.
Claimed to be an original 29,881 mile car with all original metal, mostly original paint and all original interior. The mechanics were rebuilt and detailed to factory new. From the personal collection of the "409 Professor" John Darby. He is the former NASCAR competition director and a renowned 409 expert. This car has been in his collection since 2006. He bought it from the Hendrick's collection.EXTERIOR: Completely original metal. Rust free, damage free. The body gaps are precise, doors and trunk click shut. The factory pinch welds are still showing along the lower 1/4s. In the video I said the car was repainted, that is incorrect. Only parts of the car were repainted. I would say over half is still original. The paint presents itself real well but has minor flaws. In front the bumper is shiny, the grill, trim and emblems are in real nice shape. It has all for correct T-3 headlights. The stainless side moldings and around the windows is straight and shiny. In back the trim is also bright. The door jambs are original including the weather strips, there is even an old oil change sticker from California. The glass is original. The poverty hubcaps are in mint shape and has reproduction BFGoodrich tires.
INTERIOR: Completely original from carpet to headliner. It's actually in really nice shape too. Of course it will show minor age but it's 60 years old! Thers a little staining on the carpet and front seat. The headliner, door panels and dash area are mint. No frills other than the vintage tachometer on the column. It has the correct bench seat shifter with the small white ball sticking out of the hump.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: Rare 1962 409-409 hp motor. The casting code indicates 1962 only, the stamped code QB indicates 409 hp. The motor was completely rebuilt. It has the factory aluminum intake, the dual 4 barrel carbs were restored and has the correct choke tube and glass fuel bowl. Stock exhaust manifolds, valve covers and big air cleaner. It has GM hoses and clamps. Reproduction spring clamp battery cables, the Delco battery is bolted down properly. The firewall has the assembly line markings, cadmium plated hood hinges. The generator is rebuilt. Correct slant top radiator unique to 409s only. It has correct cap, shroud and clutch fan. The vintage Sun tachometer transmitter is on the inner fender. The motor compartment is detailed to concourse condition.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: Rock solid, 100% original metal and it still has 100% of it's original gray and white spatter finish paint. It's never been sprayed over. It does have a new 3 piece mat. It also also has complete jack assembly and a correct BF Goodrich spare that's never been on the ground. The paint in the jamb and the bottom of the trunk lid is the original white paint and has original weatherstrip and jacking instruction decal.
UNDERSIDE: Underneath this car is very impressive, the floors have zero rust. They've never even been spray painted over. The braces, rockers lower quarters are bone dry. It still has the factory primer with the factory applied under coat in certain areas. The entire chassis has been cleaned, painted and detailed to factory specs including all the assembly line paint markings. The front end is completely rebuilt: new bushings, shocks, balljoints and steering components. In back it has new bushings and is detailed. The brakes have been restored. New brake lines, hoses, e-brake assembly is hooked up. New correct dual exhaust system follows the contour of the frame. Bottom of the motor is spotless, it has the correct canister type oil filter. The stater is restored. It has a Muncie M-20 4-speed. The transmission and linkage look like new. The rear end is detailed like new and has 3.55 posi gears.
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my professional impression of the vehicle.
Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video that explains the car's condition in detail.
**These cars are displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car make an appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car, your admission will be refunded and you will be given a 1 year membership.
