This recent national award winner was nut and bolt restored to its exact original condition. It functions as good as it looks. It comes with a history as interesting as the truck itself. It was owned and operated by Zook Motors, a Ford dealer in NW PA that is still in business today. It remained in service until 1969 when it was retired to their abandoned body shop. It sat there in the same spot until 2012 when Greg Rich Jr, someone who has personal ties to this truck, pulled it from its 43 year slumber. Greg's father was the sales manager for Zook's motors starting in 1954. Greg remembers the tow truck sitting in his driveway multiple times. At 5 years old he was amazed at such an interesting truck! At the age of 16 he worked at Zook's driving the tow truck, often grinding the gears! In 2012 Greg purchased the truck and began an 8 year labor of love bringing the truck back to its original brand new condition.
Awards: AACA Junior Award, Senior National 1st prize and Grand National Winner. It won best Ford and a finalist for the prestigious Zenith Award. These awards were recent, 2020 and later.
EXTERIOR: It is the 5 Star extra cab which includes stainless windshield trim, deluxe hood trim and some interior upgrades. It is all original Ford metal. No rust or damage. Repainted its original Alpine Blue color, it is smooth and glossy. The exact painted on lettering was duplicated along with Ford decals on the doors. Every weatherstrip and seal was replaced. All new glass. Any chrome or stainless was restored. Original steel grill guard. It has its authentic hazard lights at each corner, a gumball safety light on the roof and a chrome spotlight. New reproduction tires still have the nubs on the tread, restored wheels.
INTERIOR: The 5 star extra cab includes upholstered door panels, armrests and twin visors. It is restored down to the smallest detail. Look under the dash, look under the seat, it looks new. Everything works: original radio, heater, interior light etc.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT: The original 239-100 hp Flathead V-8 was taken down to a bare block and completely rebuilt. Every component is restored to factory new condition. All new correct cloth wrapped wiring. Reproduction Ford battery with a disconnect switch. Correct hoses and clamps. Dual trumpet horns.
TRUNK COMPARTMENT: The original boom and bed were built by Mayday Equipment Co. The boom and winch were rebuilt/restored and are fully functional.
UNDERSIDE: The truck was stripped to a bare frame and every part was sandblasted then painted. The brakes, steering and suspension were completely rebuilt. A correct exhaust was installed. Looking up at the motor it looks new. The 4-speed trans, clutch and related parts were rebuilt. It has 4.86 gears in the rear end. A 5th matching wheel and tire are mounted under the truck.
I love the truck and the story. This is the real deal, not a made up or basterdized truck. It is fun and interesting; people are drawn to it. This has inspired me to want our next exhibit to be vintage work trucks. I will regret letting this one go! Rarely do you find anything like this restored to this level.
I, Jay Grams, take pride in personally writing the descriptions for virtually every car for about the last 30 years now. A significant amount of effort goes into fact checking. What I am offering is my professional impression of the vehicle. Our salesmen are happy to assist with descriptions and making sure your questions are answered. One great suggestion is letting us do a walk around video that explains the car's condition in detail. **These cars are displayed in a museum. If interested in a particular car, make an appointment with a salesman to see that car. Without an appointment there is an admission fee to enter the showroom. If you buy a car, your admission will be refunded, and you will be given a 1 year membership.
