Princesses, Superheroes Day a perfect way

to enjoy spring break at Volo Auto Museum

VOLO — Families looking for a great spring break outing are invited to spend March 30 at the Volo Auto Museum, where a storm trooper or two could be spied alongside a land speeder, Captain Marvel may mix with the crowd — and much more.

Saturday, March 30, is Princesses and Superheroes Day at the museum, located at 27582 Volo Village Road. Kids dressed in costume will be admitted free, and everyone will have the chance to meet dozens of decked-out characters courtesy of Costumers With a Cause and the Fairytale Birthday Co.

A portion of all March 30 admissions, as well as fees from a Batmobile photo opportunity, will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago, said Brian Grams, museum director.

“This is our fifth year. The day is always a big hit with children and adults alike,” Grams said. “Who wouldn’t enjoy seeing Shaggy by the Scooby Doo van or bumping into Wonder Woman while taking in the star cars?”

Chrystine Shelton is head of the Midwest branch of Costumers With a Cause, a group of volunteers who enjoy dressing in elaborate superhero or villain costumes to entertain children and raise money for pediatric hospitals and other children’s charities.

“Everybody makes or buys their own costumes,” Shelton said. “It’s all done with love and from the heart. They love making kids happy and doing good work.”

More than two dozen volunteers have signed up for the March 30 event. They will portray characters running the gamut from Thor to Supergirl, Sleeping Beauty and Ariel. “We’ll also have a ’66 Batman and Batgirl, for the older crowd,” Shelton said.

They’ll feature nicely against the backdrop of the museum’s ’60s-era Batmobile, one of several iterations of the famous car on view.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Grams encouraged families to visit between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on March 30 to enjoy the maximum number of costumed characters. The day’s offerings also will include the artistry of Denver-based guest face painter Emiko Martinez.

The Volo Auto Museum is open daily and features hundreds of classic, muscle and famous film cars as well as vintage snowmobiles, bicycles, arcade games, kiddie rides and more. Regular admission is $15 for adults, $9 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. Other information and advance tickets are available at volocars.com.
