1954 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible (Richard Carpenter Car)
The Corvette was born in 1953, of which only 300 units were built essentially hand built, all were Polo white with red interior and with black canvas top. In 1954, 3640 of this model were built and nearly 1/3 unsold by years end. New colors were available: Pennant blue, Sportsman red and black in addition to Polo white, most with red interiors. The 1954 was powered by the 235 cu in Blue Flame inline 6 cylinder 155 HP; 2 speed Powerglide with drum brakes. The engines output was increased by 3 original Carter carburetor. It was decided by GM to build 10,000 units for 1954 and much consideration was given to a steel body; however the public seemed captivated by the lightweight fiber glass body. This Corvette was a late production build with original correct black and came with chrome rocker cover and dome style air cleaner and 3 Carter sidedraft carburetors. This car was purchased by Richard Carpenter of the rock band "The Carpenters". Richard, whom owned it for over 7 years, purchased the car professionally restored at the time. Documented copy of bill of sale and title along with book of all receipts included from present owner. Optional features include alarmed park brake, AM radio with signal seek, windshield washers and rare removable plexiglass side windows. Recently the engine, transmission, drivetrain fuel and braking system underwent a one year $15,000.00 no expense spared mechanical restoration professionally rebuilt to original specifications. All original electrical, cooking and fuel systems, hoses, master cylinder and shoes were rebuilt. All replacement parts with receipts were purchased from Corvette central. The Polo white body is in wonderful condition with believed original red interior. The car was driven under 500 miles since mechanical restoration, no known accidents. When Richard Carpenter purchased the car the odometer was at 27,600 miles and was only driven approx. 1300 miles in the last 23 years. Youtube video available upon request.
