1948 Daimler DE 36 Drophead Coupe
A great attraction at the 1948 London motor show, was a magnificent streamlined drophead coupe. The immense size of this fantastic auto - 20 feet long and 6' 5" wide. Built by the Daimler Company of Coventry, England with custom body by Hooper and Co. 54 St James St. London S.W.I. The Daimlers were the favorite of British royalty such as King George VI and father George V and Grandfather Edward VII. The DE 36 model first appeared in 1946 and in fact, much favored by Royal families the world over. Of the 205 examples produced during 8 years of production it is believed only 7 icon Drophead Coupes were produced by in-house coach builder Hooper and Co at the bequest of Lady Norah Docker, wife of Sir Bernard Docker, chairman of the parent company. This Hooper bodied Drophead Coupe sports extremely advanced styling for its time, the entire body was built of aluminum. Of particular interest was the electro-hydraulically operated convertible top which folded away under a power operated metal covered boot. The windscreen (windshield) was so wide, it required 3 windshield wipers with large skirts fitted with spring balanced arms. The adjustable leather bench seat in front was fitted with 3 backs, 2 of which were hinged for entry to the two back seats positioned that rear view was not obstructed by front passengers. The say about 8 of these cars were built with 7 known. The car, exhibited at Earls Court, on chassis 51233 was painted in pastel Jade green with beige leather upholstery, hence the unofficial christening "Green Goddess" or "Chariot of the Sun". Not all of these special built cars were painted green such as this example. Completely professionally restored in England with restoration photo album and manuals, finished to the highest standards of detail. The long sweeping body exterior is clad in 2 tone maroon with crème leather interior and tan harts cloth top. This car is an exquisite show stopper custom built for the connoisseur of the finest.
