We suspected we might see some increased foot traffic while our recent admission-price rollback was in play. But what truly transpired went beyond our wildest imagination (and if you’ve been here, you know that’s saying a lot).

Thousands walked through our doors in the nine days between Dec. 2 and Dec. 10 when we offered 50-cent admission — a nostalgic nod to the fee folks paid back when the Volo Auto Museum first opened in 1960. In fact, 4,083 people visited. That’s a high nine-day number. And we are so pleased to have introduced — or in some cases re-introduced — our museum on Volo Village Road to so many.

Men and women, moms and dads, grandparents and grandkids ... all entered with smiles and left with some magical new memories.

“I want to thank you for having your 50-cent admission promotion,” wrote one admirer. “My dad had a quadruple bypass in September and is now slowly getting around ... I asked him if he wanted to see the cars. He first said no.”

The woman’s dad was concerned about the possibility he might become winded and have to cut the visit short. He didn’t want her to waste her money. But when she told him about the special rate, his demeanor changed.

“I am happy to say we made it through most of the buildings,” she wrote. “I don’t know how much time I have left with my dad, but I know he really enjoyed seeing the cars and spending time with me and my family. It will be a memory that will not be forgotten.

“Thank you for making it possible.”

Hers was not the only heart-tugging tale. One woman told the employee at our ticket gate that she’d just worked a 14-hour shift to ensure she’d be able to cover her mortgage. On an ordinary weekend, bringing her kids to the museum would not be in the cards. But the 50-cent deal made it possible and they, too, would cherish the memories.

With normal adult admission costing $15, others simply took advantage of the rollback to see for themselves what they’d been missing, or to revisit the museum after years away.

One woman enjoyed her first visit so much, she came back four more times, each time bringing a new set of friends, and each time making a new discovery.

The common thread for all of the visitors? Amazement. With hundreds of classic and Hollywood cars and, in recent years, the addition of nautical, agricultural, animatronic, snowmobile, scooter, Disney, RV, antique kiddy ride, music machine and other exhibits — not to mention the absolutely eye-popping Duesenberg Room — the Volo Auto Museum offers so much to see.

We want to thank all of those who came out and took us up on the recent low-price offer. We know you’ll spread the word about how much you enjoyed it.

Our goal is to continue to offer a world-class museum, which is possible only with your support through admissions and memberships. That’s not to say we’ll never offer a deal like this again; to be sure you don’t miss it, be sure to follow us.
