VOLO — After a several-months-long, high-dollar facelift, the “Back to the Future” DeLorean at Volo Auto Museum so exactingly mirrors its inspiration, even Marty McFly might not spy the difference.

 

The museum’s time-traveling DeLorean display has been a fan favorite since becoming a part of the collection in the 1990s. Sparked by the hugely popular 1980s film franchise featuring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and others, Volo’s car was among the first exhibition models built. But some cinema devotees gave it a Biff Tannen-esque appraisal. 

 

“Because our car was one of the first, its modifications were a bit crude,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “We heard what some visitors were saying. We listened. We always want our guests to have the most jaw-dropping, amazing experience. So, we hired Coulombe Enterprises of Florida to perform a $60,000 renovation.”

 

Coulombe, the same company that crafts models for use in Universal Studios Orlando theme parks, worked on Volo’s 1982 DeLorean from October until April. The transformation will debut Mother’s Day weekend. And it is sure to delight those who know their flux capacitors from their Mr. Fusions.

 

From the iconic time circuits display on the dashboard down to the old-school, plastic-embossed labels throughout the cabin and the wedge-shaped steam vents in the back, this car has it all. 

 

“It even has a flux capacitor that is signed by Christopher Lloyd,” said Grams, referring to the actor who portrayed the quirky and lovable Doc Brown. “We’re excited to show our DeLorean off again, and we look forward to introducing a whole new generation to the imagination that fuels Hollywood cars.”

The Volo Auto Museum features roughly 400 classic, muscle and film-famous cars as well as vintage snowmobiles, scooters, antique arcade machines and other rarities. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
